Artist Statement:
As a toddler, overhearing the words alacrán (Spanish for scorpion) and scorpion, I began calling the creatures Crapions, much to my family’s laughter and enjoyment. Over the years, this nickname became a recurring family story, retold each time we encountered the creature again. This is the second Crapion piece, the first being a slightly smaller version and this one having a curlier tail and dimensional eyeballs.
Crapion II is part of a larger series, Hometown Mythologies, which constructs a novel folkloric vocabulary from personal memory and experience growing up in the San Antonio Hill Country. Through this series, I transform family stories into visual myths, blending nostalgia with fantastical imagery to give shape to an evolving, personal mythology.
